Resting in our Limitations

Praying together 10th Dec 2024

Resting in our Limitations.

In what area of your life are you prone to feeling like you’re it? Like it all rests on your shoulders and if you don’t do, it no one will.

There are many reasons we might feel like this, often connected to the great passion we have for something, the responsibility we carry or the enormity of the task at hand.

Today’s passage is written by David, the great King of Israel, a powerful leader in the middle east. How did he manage to hold all the responsibility and pressure of such a role and still be a man after God’s own heart? He was the closest thing to a messiah Israel had known… but he was not God. He, like us was limited and had needs and struggled with sin.

Psalm 131

1My heart is not proud, Lord,

my eyes are not haughty;

I do not concern myself with great matters

or things too wonderful for me.

2But I have calmed and quieted myself,

I am like a weaned child with its mother;

like a weaned child I am content.

3Israel, put your hope in the Lord

both now and forevermore.

King David reminds us that no matter who we are or what responsibility we have, we are all limited beings and dependent creatures. We are not God.

Kelly Kapic in his book “you’re only Human” says;

Many of us fail to understand that our limitations are a gift from God, and therefore good. This produces in us the burden of trying to be something we are not and cannot be.

When we accept that we are dependent creatures, and come to God as a child, we can truly know a deep rest. Think of the child in his mother’s arms; content, trusting, safe, dependent, and at rest.

This Psalm issues an invitation to remember who God is, who we are and to put our hope in Him

How will you slow down to be with God this Christmas? How will you express your dependence on Him?
