Free English Classes

NB: For one week only, classes will be subject to minor changes. The 1:30pm classes will meet outside St Columba's (the usual venue) and make their way to the Museum of Scotland in Chambers Street where there will be various activities. The 5pm classes will meet in Starbucks, 124 High Street, EH1 1QS where we will learn English over coffee. Carrubbers Free English Classes take place at St Columba's Free Church, Johnston Terrace, EH1 2PW on Tuesdays from Tuesday 5th May to Tuesdsy26th June 2026. See below for times and months of classes.

 

What are Free English Classes?

Carrubbers Free English Classes are for anyone who wants to improve their English.

Our Free English Classes mainly follow a program by All Souls Church, Langham Place.

Teachers are volunteers, so may not have teacher training qualifications, but will help you follow established materials.

The lessons are intended for beginner and Basic learners (CEF levels A1 & A2), and Intermediate learners (CEF levels B1 & B2) - and only aim to provide additional English language support - they are not meant to be a complete course of English teaching or to replace a course in a language school.

Basic-level groups focus mainly on everyday spoken language. Intermediate groups use more expository texts which describe or explain things. We also include narrative texts from time to time.

You will get the most out of the lessons if you come regularly, take home the worksheet each week and revise what you have learned.

When are they?

In 2026 classes take place in the months of

  • February
  • March
  • May
  • June
  • September
  • October
  • November

At the following times:

  • Every Tuesday: Main classes are 1:30 - 2:45pm and 5 - 6:15pm, with additional opportunities for reading and listening from 3 - 30pm (bible book of John) and 4:00-4:30pm (bible book of Acts).
  • Note: The classes scheduled for Tuesday 3nd March will now take place on Monday 2nd March at the usual times - the hall is unavailable on Tuesday to allow a wedding to take place.

Where are they?

From Tuesday 23rd September 2025 for about a year,  lessons are in St Columba's Free Church, Johnston Terrace Edinburgh EH1 2PW (map). This is very close to the Royal Mile and entry will be by the red back door - down Upper Bow and turn right on to Victoria Terrace.
